Here are a few of the fun books we read while learning about Chinese New Year. No, these books don’t specifically talk about Chinese New Year, however they are wonderful Chinese themed books.

The Seven Chinese Brothers written by Margaret Mahy, illustrated by Jean and Mou-sien Tseng

This book was a favorite read aloud of my students when I taught Fourth Grade, and it is now a favorite of my 1st and 3rd grade daughters. The Seven Chinese Brothers is a retelling of a classic Chinese folktale of seven brothers who all have their own special powers. The book is full of adventure and a great read aloud.

We love Fairy Tales in our home. We also love twists on Fairy Tales. This twist on Little Red Riding Hood is loved my 3rd grader, however my 1st grader prefers the classic version of Little Red Riding Hood. I happen to think it is a very cleverly written book which won the 1990 Caldecott Medal.

Kung Fu Panda – I Can Find It! adaption by Sheena Chihak and Loki

My girls have always loved any type of Look and Find, Search and Find, etc. books. While learning about the Lantern Festival (which is celebrated on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year), it was fun for my girls to find all of the brightly illustrated lanterns illustrated in this book. It also helped the girls picture what the streets might look like decorated for Chinese New Year.
