I am so excited to share this activity with you. This summer we lived next to a golf course while we were transitioning to our new home. Every morning we would get up to take our dogs for a walk and my girls would have so much fun collecting golf balls that were lost by unfortunate golfers. Now I come from a family of major golfers. In fact, my father was a Golf Pro growing up and he still is an ABSOLUTELY amazing golfer. But, the teacher in me knew that I would eventually figure out a fun way to use these golf balls, besides what they are really used for.

So, the other day I was planning out my first Halloween Unit for my preschool aged daughter, and our first theme for the unit was “Ghosts” (the cute ones not scary ones of course). Then the idea hit me. I decided to make some of the golf balls into ghosts and use them as math manipulatives. Pretty simple right, but oh so much fun!

I put a piece of felt on a tray and divided in half by using my daughters “magic wand” her uncle carved for her. I then took my napkin rings that I actually had in my “giveaway box” and I placed the golf balls (that I quickly drew faces on with a permanent marker) inside the napkin rings.

Little Red then had so much fun rearranging the golf balls by placing different amounts on either side of the wooden wand.

She then recorded her findings on the “Ghost Addition Printable” that I am providing for you.

Little Red drew the ghost how she saw them, added them all up, and then recorded the total amount. We had a great discussion on how all the different amounts added, equalled the number 8. She thought that was pretty fun. We then took some of the golf balls away so that we could have a different total amount.

Little Red had so much fun doing this that she asked for me to make more copies of this printable.

Tomorrow I am going to use the ghost golf balls to practice tossing in a bucket, as well as to play “Hide and Go Seek Ghost” with.

I will probably do this same activity but with subtraction.
